Skin Cancer
Southern California Plastic Surgery Group

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and affects many people in Beverly Hills, Long Beach, and Los Angeles, California. Early detection is the key to surviving skin cancer and can minimize the visual impact as well. About 80 percent of skin cancers occur on the face, head or neck.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, from the sun or tanning booths, is the number one cause of skin cancer. It can affect anyone regardless of skin type, race, or age. The only way to protect yourself is to avoid exposure to UV rays.

What does it look like?

Skin cancer may appear as moles and growths, flat discolorations, or rough scaly patches. Be familiar with the look and feel of your skin and examine yourself on a regular basis. If you find any suspicious areas, have them checked out. It could save your life. When skin cancer is detected early it is easy to remove and leaves little or no scarring.

Treatments

Procedures such as chemical peels and dermabrasion can remove precancerous cells before they develop into skin cancer. Small growths can be easily removed and rarely leave a noticeable scar. Larger growths and growths in conspicuous areas may leave an unsightly scar. In these cases scar revision is an important part of skin cancer treatment.

Prevent a recurrence

After skin cancer treatment it is absolutely necessary that you, the patient, take an active role in prevention. You can protect your skin by:

* Avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun
* Wearing protective clothing
* Using sun block
* Making regular follow up visits to your doctor
